K is for

KOBO. RIP KOBO.

Having been initially sceptical, I soon warmed to the idea of owning an e-reader, and plumped for a stylish lilac Kobo Touch. It became my new best friend, although never replacing actual books themselves, provided an easy, less clutter and convenient way to read books.

Touch sensitive technology is something that I have never been keen on. My sister had a touch-sensitive game which stopped working after a month due to the batteries failing…and being hard to replace. Now only half of it works…the useless half. My sister has since gone on to buy a touch screen phone, which I find hard to navigate, and so does she, as it is slow to respond. She now realises the problem.

Call me old-fashioned but I prefer something real to press. I like buttons! It is a bit risky to leave it to a screen to use a product. Plus, the screen has a habit of failing (or perhaps it is just poor luck on my part). Anyway, when I opted for the Kobo, this touch screen wasn’t a problem. At times, it did respond a bit crazily - sometimes it wouldn’t register, and then at other times it would turn your page twice, but these issues soon eased down with increasing use. I soon got used to the touch screen and it felt like I had been using the e-reader for ages.

Well that was then, this is now. Now, the touch screen doesn’t work at all - completely busted (even after numerous reset and rewipe attempts). Now, I can’t use the thing to read! I think I am cursed. It does leave me wondering whether I am suited to the future. Technology is advancing in such a way to make things smaller with wi-fi (not my problem in this entry) and touch screen - from tablets, computers and TVs to MP3 players and mobile phones. I could easily see 20 years from now a whole house (kitchen, bathroom, etc.) being controlled using technology of the touch screen. And that worries me. I may just be talking nonsense here - losing my Kobo has sent me slightly insane - but is touch screen technology really all that?

Anyway, I bid farewell to my Kobo, which has left an e-reader shaped hole in my life (not exaggerating in any way…). Alas, lilac Kobo, I knew you well. Or maybe I should have opted for a Kindle instead. With BUTTONS.

*Luckily, I have managed to get a refund for my Kobo, but touch screen has scarred me for life!!!! (still not exaggerating in any way…)
